University Employee
The hiring of personnel to be associated with a sponsored program is strictly guided by university policies and procedures, as well as any sponsor regulations. The PI/PD can only recruit for positions listed in the award.
If the person to be hired will be an employee of the university (as opposed to a consultant or independent contractor), the PI/PD is responsible for submitting an HR Form to Human Resources to initiate the hiring process. The form to be submitted depends upon the position to be filled. Further information on the hiring process can be obtained at http://www.olemiss.edu/projects/sacs2009/ccr/rsrc/SACS/Item30209FacultyStaffAppointment/HR_General_Employment_Policies.pdf.
PIs/PDs should be aware that they are responsible for completing and returning quarterly Activity Reports (Exhibit P) to Accounting to account for the employee’s time and effort devoted to the sponsored project. This includes time and effort paid by project funds as well as time and effort devoted to the project as cost sharing. Further information on effort reporting can be obtained at http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/contracts/activityrep.html.
Consultant or Independent Contractor
Activities performed by an individual under a sponsored agreement are normally administered through a consulting agreement. The PI/PD is responsible for submitting an HR Form 13 (Exhibit F) to Human Resources to initiate the hiring process.
