Animal Resources (AR) provides animal procurement, husbandry, health care, and scientific support for all University of Mississippi (U of M) animal facilities and all animals used in teaching and research. AR has prepared the following plans for addressing emergency situations and disasters in animal facilities, on campus, or in the surrounding area. These are coordinated with other University groups (see the Emergency Preparedness Plan for the University, and the Department of Health and Safety manuals) and the City of Oxford as appropriate. The purpose of this manual is to offer guidelines for personnel on site at the time of an emergency or disaster and to suggest possible and likely approaches to protecting both human and animal health after the primary response teams (e.g., fire department, police, and safety offices) have responded. Professional judgment is essential in these situations.
