DOE Energy 101 Course Framework

The Department of Energy (DOE) and its  Energy 101 project collaborators will present a live webcast entitled “The Energy 101 Course Framework” on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, from 2:00-4:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time.

This webinar is for educators, administrators, and other interested parties who would like to learn about the Energy 101 course framework and how their institutions can get involved in this effort.  Also included will be information on how the framework has been used in the development of an ongoing pilot course at the University of Maryland.

The Energy 101 Course Framework is based on DOE’s Energy Literacy: Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts for Energy Education and will teach energy from an interdisciplinary perspective in an effort to capture the dynamic role energy plays in our lives -- including relevant scientific, technological and societal aspects. It was designed to challenge college students at two and four-year schools across the country to explore systematically the science and social science behind sound energy decision-making. It also builds on DOE’s work, through the National Training and Educational Resource (NTER) and other means, to make interdisciplinary, immersive energy content available for all to use.

The framework was developed by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, ORAU, the University of Maryland, and the Environmental and Energy Studies Institute, with input from their discussions with post-secondary energy education experts and public comment. The Energy 101 framework hopes to support a national energy dialogue on energy education at the post-secondary level, with the goals of increasing domestic energy literacy, and advancing the development of more pathways towards careers in energy to promote the nation’s future energy workforce needs.

You can register to attend the webinar at http://www1.eere.energy.gov/education/energy_101.html.  For any questions, please contact Mikki Prater,mikki.prater@orise.orau.gov.   The webinar will be recorded and placed on the ORAU University Partnerships Members Only web site soon after April 10.
